As you may know, Ottawa is a great city for cycling. What better way is there to enjoy the Victoria Day Weekend than to travel to Ottawa to enjoy its amazing network of bike paths over the course of a three-day stay?

This event will involve a three-night stay (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night) in downtown Ottawa.

We will be staying at the University of Ottawa Residence at 90 University Ave., where I have booked two suites. Each suite can accommodate 4 persons and has two bedrooms, each with a double-bed, and a shared kitchenette and bathroom. Within each suite, we will be able to do our own cooking and prepare our own lunches, if we wish. Breakfast will be provided at the residence on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday mornings.

We will be able to store our bicycles in a secure storage area separate from the suites. The storage area will be accessible only to those staying at the residence who have access, and the storage area has video surveillance. You must still bring a lock for your own bicycle, however, and the lock should be used when the bikes are in the storage area.

Our aim will be to cycle the extensive system of bike paths during our stay, keeping in mind that we will also want to dine at some of Ottawa's fine restaurants (while recovering from our cycling adventures and exertions)and take in some of the local cultural events (theatre or otherwise) contemporaneous with our time in Ottawa. Perhaps even a tour of the Parliament Buildings would be possible, or a visit to the National Art Gallery.

If you sign up for this event, you should be in good, above-average riding form, and capable of riding at least 50km per day on each of three consecutive days. Depending on the nature of our group, we make break into two smaller groups, one for faster riders, and one for slower riders. But this event is meant to constitute a fairly vigorous physical workout for those who participate, and not merely a leisurely escape to Ottawa (however pleasant that might in itself be).If you have not done at least one full-day ride with a distance of over 50 km, this event is not for you.

If interested in this event, you may sign up now, but you may later have to qualify for participation by demonstrating, through participation in at least one spring biking event with Jim O, that you are prepared for the type of physical workout that this event will require. When posting one-day rides for dates preceding the Victoria Day Weekend, I will designate such rides as "qualification rides" for the Ottawa Trip and other lengthier trips that are in the planning stage. So, to know which events serve as "qualification events", be sure to read event descriptions carefully.

I want to encourage enthusiastic participation in cycling events, but I also realize that participation in more demanding cycling events requires effective preparation and fitness training, so that everyone who attends is capable of participating fully and enjoyably with the group in the type of activity proposed. If you are not up to participating in the Ottawa Trip, there will likely be other cycling events posted on other dates that will be suitable for you.

Required Items to Bring:
Your own bicycle (in tip-top condition), two spare tire tubes, a strong bike lock, a basic bicycle repair kit and working tire pump, containers for carrying water (if you do not intend to buy bottled water).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Funds for snacks and meals and other entertainment options in the Ottawa area (we will be going out in the evenings!).

How to Get There:
Event Directions:To be provided at a later date.
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):900Km
Carpool Departure Time: 10:00 AM
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $232.20 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Thursday, May 9, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:
Accommodations have now been booked in Ottawa for this event, for up to 8 participants. If you have signed up, you must make your payment for the cost of the event by no later than the payment cut-off date. If your payment is not received by that date, you will be removed from participation in the event. No exceptions.

Later in the summer, there may be opportunities to participate in a week-long bike tour in Quebec, and possibly another week-long bike tour in New York State. Therefore, if you are interested in building your cycling strength for more arduous events down the road, the Ottawa Trip will be an excellent opportunity for you to train in the necessary way for subsequent events that are currently in the planning stage.

If this event is full but you are still interested in participating, you should sign up on the wait-list and make a payment in advance of the cut-off date. If a spot should open up, you will then be in a position to become an event participant.

WHEN NOT RIDING OUR BICYCLES, WE WILL BE KEEPING THEM IN A SECURE STORAGE AREA OF THE UNIVERSITY RESIDENCE, PROTECTED BY VIDEO SURVEILLANCE, AND WITH RESTRICTED ACCESS. WE WILL BE RIGHT IN THE DOWNTOWN, CLOSE TO MANY EXCELLENT RESTAURANTS.
- Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the TOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
- When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with full refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where TOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refund of money if you cancel.
- We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines at all times while participating in TOC events.
- Details of this event are subject to undergo a change at any point in time, with or without warning.

Cost & Payment:
Member Cost:$100.00/Person
Cost Includes:NOTE: THE COST FOR THIS EVENT HAS BEEN REVISED FROM $225 PER PERSON to $100.00 per person. The cost, which is based upon 8 people attending, does not include your car-pool contribution (which will have ADDED to it parking costs in Ottawa at $11 per car per night at the university--cost for parking is dependent upon how many vehicles we ultimately take to Ottawa) or the cost of your food and entertainment in Ottawa. You will have to bring sufficient additional funds for the costs of food and entertainment, etc.

Note: If 8 people do not attend the event, then the accommodation cost per person may have to be adjusted slightly upward. Under the current accommodation arrangements, with two suites booked, if we have only 7 people (and there is only one person in one bedroom of one of the two suites), then the cost per person for accommodation would rise to about $113.

By signing up for this event you are acknowledging that there might be slight cost fluctuations depending upon the final size of our group, and that you will pay your proportionate share of the accommodation costs.
Payment Cut Off:Payment must be received by the TOC on Thu, May 8 2008.
Make a Payment:Click here for the details. PLEASE PAY AFTER YOU HAVE SIGNED UP BELOW.

Voluntary Donation:What is this?)
Suggested donation amount for this event is: $2.00/Person.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:
Please review our Cancellation Policy carefully!
*Note: If you have to withdraw from participating in this event after you have made your payment for the cost of the event (e.g. hotel accommodation in Ottawa, etc.), there will be a refund only if another TOC member can be found to take your place on the event and that person makes a payment in full that can replace your own. Note: If you need to withdraw from the event after making payment, the event organizer is NOT responsible for finding someone to replace you on the event.
