Itinerary:
I have not cycled on the Tay Shore Trail before, but I invite you to join me in discovering what it has to offer. A reliable source tells me that the Tay Shore Trail is fully paved from Waubausheene to Midland, and that there is also a paved link from this trail to Port McNicholl that was completed late in September of 2007. The distance between Waubaushene and Midland is 16.5 km one-way; we will thus cycle a distance of about 33 km from Waubaushene to Midland and back, and we will also ride on the link to Port McNicholl and back. Once in Midland, we may also check out the Midpen link that connects Midland to Penetanguishene.

If we are riding at a average pace of about 18-22 km per hour, a ride of this length should take about 4.0 to 4.5 hours to complete, if one includes some time for picture-taking and breaks along the way, and for a lunch break. The Tay Shore Trail does pass near the shore of Sturgeon Bay and, at points, along Victoria Harbour, so hopefully we will have some gorgeous scenery to enjoy as we cycle by. Midland is supposed to be a very lovely community, and we will try to have lunch there at one of the local establishments. If you do not bring a lunch, you should be able to pick up something there to eat.

You should also be prepared for the cooler late-October temperatures. Bring appropriate clothing, including suitable biking gloves, a toque (for under your helmet, if necessary) and rain-gear. Be prepared to add/subtract layers of clothing as necessary. Avoid wearing cotton garments, as they retain moisture.)

NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CAR, OR IF YOU DO AND YOU CAN TAKE MORE THAN ONE PERSON/BIKE WITH YOUR VEHICLE, PLEASE INDICATE SO WHEN YOU SIGN UP, IN THE "NOTES" SECTION AT THE END OF THE REGISTRATION PAGE.

IF YOU CAN DRIVE AND YOU ARE ABLE TO TRANSPORT BICYCLES, YOU SHOULD PROVIDE ME WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN YOU SIGN UP: 1) WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE DO YOU DRIVE? 2) DO YOU HAVE A BIKE-RACK, AND, IF SO, HOW MANY BIKES CAN IT CARRY (INCLUDING YOUR OWN)?

IF YOUR TRANSPORTATION SITUATION CHANGES AFTER YOU HAVE REGISTERED (I.E. YOU AND YOUR BIKE NO LONGER REQUIRE A RIDE TO THE EVENT, OR YOU HAVE FOUND AN ALTERNATE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION), PLEASE LET ME KNOW, SO THAT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN DESIGNATED A TRANSPORTATION SPOT, I CAN RE-ASSIGN THAT SPOT TO SOMEONE ELSE.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU SIGN UP FOR THIS EVENT, PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR BIKE IS TUNED UP AND PROPERLY ADJUSTED FOR THE RIDE. AS THE RIDE IS 65 KM LONG, WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY BREAK-DOWNS, ESPECIALLY IF, THROUGH PROPER BIKE MAINTENANCE, WE CAN AVOID THEM.

Required Items to Bring:
Bike, bike helmet, spare tire tube, basic bicycle repair kit, water, lunch/snacks, suitable and variable clothing, including gloves, a toque that fits under your helmet, and rain-gear (keep in mind the potential for cooler temperatures near the water in October.).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:We will be beginning the ride north of Barrie, at the Coldwater Rd. Parkette near Waubaushene, just off of Highway 12. To get to the starting point, take Highway 400 north of Barrie. Then exit Highway 400 for Waubaushene at Interchange 147, going west on Highway 12. The exit ramp curves around and then under the highway overpass. Just beyond the overpass, I am told that there is a green and white sign with the words "Waubaushene" and "Pine Street". Turn right at Pine St. The second cross-road along Pine St. is Coldwater Road. Turn right onto Coldwater Rd. and look for the Coldwater Rd. Parkette, where we will park our cars. We will cycle on the Tay Shore Trail in a westerly direction to Midland, and then back to Waubaushene.
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):300 Km
Carpool Departure Time: 9:45 AM
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $77.40 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Thursday, May 9, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:
PLEASE SEE THE NOTES REGARDING TRANSPORTATION IN THE ITINERARY SECTION ABOVE.

Whether 9 people can actually participate in the event is contingent on whether there are enough cars going that can take both participants and their bicycles. Therefore, if you can carry additional passengers and/or bicycles with your vehicle, it is important for you to make this known to the organizer when you sign up. I will try to ensure that everyone is accommodated, on a first-come, first-serve basis (in the order that people expressly indicate that they require transportation).

IF YOU AND YOUR BIKE REQUIRE A RIDE TO THE EVENT, OR IF YOU CAN ASSIST WITH TRANSPORTING OTHER PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR BICYCLES TO AND FROM THE TRAIL, PLEASE INDICATE THIS IN THE "NOTES" SECTION WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THE EVENT, AND KEEP ME INFORMED OF ANY CHANGES TO YOUR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS/ PLANS.
