Itinerary:
I have not done this rail trail before, but I invite you to join me in discovering what it has to offer. The objective of this ride is to encourage those who are new to rail trails, and those who want to try a ride that will be less than 40 km in length. So if the distances of some of the other rides have been too long, this ride is for you!

From http://www.brucegreytrails.com, one learns the following: "The Saugeen Rail Trail connects Southampton, Saugeen Township and Port Elgin along the abandoned CN rail line. A popular trip is to travel the entire trail by bike from Port Elgin to Southampton and loop back along the scenic North Shore Road where beautiful views of Lake Huron can be experienced." This is the basic ride that I would like to do, though if the trail has been extended and it is in good condition, we may go a bit farther.

The above-mentioned website also states: "As of 2002, the trail has been extended southward with the completion of the Mill Creek Loop south of Louis Street. Extensive plans are in place to continue south to MacGregor Point Provincial Park."

"The trailhead is at River Street in Port Elgin, a few blocks north of the town and east of Hwy 21. Parking is also available at Concession 10, Saugeen Township, and McNabb Street in Southampton." As the official trail head is located in Port Elgin on River Street, that is where we will start our ride.

NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CAR, OR IF YOU DO AND YOU CAN TAKE MORE THAN ONE PERSON/BIKE WITH YOUR VEHICLE, PLEASE INDICATE SO WHEN YOU SIGN UP, IN THE "NOTES" SECTION AT THE END OF THE REGISTRATION PAGE.

IF YOU CAN DRIVE AND YOU ARE ABLE TO TRANSPORT BICYCLES, YOU SHOULD PROVIDE ME WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN YOU SIGN UP: 1) WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE DO YOU DRIVE? 2) DO YOU HAVE A BIKE-RACK, AND, IF SO, HOW MANY BIKES CAN IT CARRY? (INCLUDING YOUR OWN); WHAT IS THE NEAREST TTC SUBWAY STATION TO YOUR RESIDENCE?

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO DRIVE AND YOU WILL REQUIRE TRANSPORTATION TO THE EVENT FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR BICYCLE, YOU SHOULD PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN YOU SIGN UP: 1) WHAT IS YOUR RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS ? (NEEDED TO ARRANGE FOR POSSIBLE PICK UP AT YOUR RESIDENCE); 2) WHAT IS YOUR CELL-PHONE OR TELEPHONE NUMBER? 3) WHAT IS THE NEAREST TTC SUBWAY STATION TO WHERE YOU LIVE?

I WILL TRY TO SET PEOPLE UP WITH A RIDE/PASSENGER. IF YOUR TRANSPORTATION SITUATION CHANGES AFTER YOU HAVE REGISTERED (I.E. YOU AND YOUR BIKE NO LONGER REQUIRE A RIDE TO THE EVENT, OR YOU HAVE FOUND AN ALTERNATE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION), PLEASE LET ME KNOW, SO THAT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN DESIGNATED A TRANSPORTATION SPOT, I CAN RE-ASSIGN THAT SPOT TO SOMEONE ELSE.

IT IS ALSO HELPFUL IF YOU LET ME KNOW WHETHER YOU HAVE A "LADY'S BICYCLE" WITH A SLANTING UPPER-MIDDLE BAR BETWEEN THE HANDLES AND THE SEAT, AS THIS TYPE OF BIKE CANNOT BE CARRIED BY ALL BIKE RACKS.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU SIGN UP FOR THIS EVENT, PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR BIKE IS TUNED UP AND PROPERLY ADJUSTED FOR THE RIDE. AS THE RIDE IS A LONG ONE, WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY BREAK-DOWNS, ESPECIALLY IF, THROUGH PROPER BIKE MAINTENANCE, WE CAN AVOID THEM.

How to Get There:
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):336Km
Carpool Departure Time: N/A
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $86.69 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Tuesday, May 14, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:
PLEASE SEE THE NOTES REGARDING TRANSPORTATION IN THE ITINERARY SECTION ABOVE.

Whether 9 people can actually participate in the event is contingent on whether there are enough cars going that can take both participants and their bicycles. Therefore, if you can carry additional passengers and/or bicycles with your vehicle, it is important for you to make this known to the organizer when you sign up. I will try to ensure that everyone is accommodated, on a first-come, first-serve basis (in the order that people expressly indicate that they require transportation).

IF YOU AND YOUR BIKE REQUIRE A RIDE TO THE EVENT, OR IF YOU CAN ASSIST WITH TRANSPORTING OTHER PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR BICYCLES TO AND FROM THE GEORGIAN TRIAL, PLEASE INDICATE THIS IN THE "NOTES" SECTION WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THE EVENT, AND KEEP ME INFORMED OF ANY CHANGES TO YOUR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS/ PLANS.
