Itinerary:
Curious about Kurosawa? Beguiled by Bergman? Join us for Cinematheque Ontario's summer of Hollywood and foreign film classics! Here is your chance to see some of the movies that appear every film critic's Top 100 list. They could be the best films you'll ever see ... or you might leave wondering what all the fuss is about. Either way, we'll have fun exploring the classics.

Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal is the third film in our series. From the Cinematheque website:
Max von Sydow plays Antonius Blok, a knight who returns home after a decade fighting in the Holy Crusades of the fourteenth century. His country, ravaged by the black plague, is in a frenzy of self-flagellation and witch hunts. When Death comes to claim the knight, he attempts a gambit: he challenges the grim reaper to a game of chess, hoping to gain enough time to overcome his spiritual doubt before he perishes.

Admittedly, it sounds a little bleak, but The Seventh Seal holds such a significant place in cinematic and cultural history that it is definitely worth seeing. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival and the 1958 Grand Prix International du Film d'Avant-garde, The Seventh Seal earned Bergman the Nastro d'Argento (silver ribbon) for Best Director of a foreign film by the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists in 1961.

But the impact of the film can't be measured by awards and accolades alone. The Seventh Seal is the source of some of the most memorable images in film, most notably that of Death depicted as a white-faced hooded figure. You've likely seen one of the countless parodies it has inspired (such as Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, the death scene in Monty Python's Meaning of Life, Woody Allen's Love and Death, several episodes of Family Guy, and my favourite French & Saunders sketch). Why not join us and see the original?

We will meet at 6:00 p.m. at the entrance to Jackman Hall. The screening begins at 6:30 p.m. Following the movie, we will head to Baldwin Avenue for dinner/drinks and conversation, film-related or otherwise.

Please note that members are responsible for purchasing their own tickets to ALL screenings. Tickets can be purchased in person at Jackman Hall; online by following the links on the Cinematheque Ontario website; or by phone at 416-968-FILM (3456). As every Cinematheque event I've attended has been pretty much sold out, you are strongly advised to buy your tickets sooner rather than later!
