Itinerary:
I have not done this ride before, but I welcome you to join me in discovering what it has to offer.

NOTE THE EARLY CARPOOL DEPARTURE TIME! (8:00 A.M.)

On a website dedicated to the Rideau Canal Waterway, this bike ride is described as follows:

"This particular loop will take you along the Cataraqui Trail, so it is best to use a mountain bike or hybrid. There is a shorter 75 km loop that will take you from Chafffeys to Perth Road Village to West Port, to Newboro, to Forfar and back along the Cataraqui Trail. The longer 127 km loop takes you from Chaffeys to Perth Road Village, to Westport, to Perth, to Rideau Ferry, to Lombardy and back along the Cataraqui Trail to Chaffeys. Sights include the locks at Chaffeys, Bedford Mills, Foley Mountain and lots of lovely natural and rural scenery."

We will be doing the shorter, 75km ride. I have classified this ride as "moderate-to-difficult" because of the length of the ride. You have to be ready for a ride of this length and intensity in order to participate. You should be able to maintain an average speed of at least 15 km per hour if you register for the event. Part of the ride is on the Cataraqui Trial and part of the ride is on paved, lower traffic back roads.

The start of the trail is at Chaffeys Lock. Access is at the junction of Indian Lake and Opinicon Roads--1 km west of the lock.

After our ride, we may briefly tour Chaffeys to take in the locks, the Opinicon Resort Hotel and its surrounding area, and Chaffeys Lockmasters House Museum.

Historically, the lock-system is very interesting. Between 1826 and 1831, the British built the Rideau Canal Waterway . It was envisioned as a means of strengthening the defence of Canada. The waterway allows boats to commute between Montreal and the Great Lakes.

When signing up for this event, make sure that your bike is in a good state of repair and properly tuned up in all respects. If anyone has a bicycle that is not in proper working condition, that can prevent the other participants from fully enjoying the ride.

NOTE: THERE IS NO OFFICIAL CAR-POOL FOR THIS EVENT, BUT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CAR, OR IF YOU DO AND YOU CAN TAKE MORE THAN ONE PERSON/BIKE WITH YOUR VEHICLE, PLEASE INDICATE SO WHEN YOU SIGN UP, IN THE "NOTES" SECTION AT THE END OF THE REGISTRATION PAGE.

IF YOU CAN DRIVE AND YOU ARE ABLE TO TRANSPORT BICYCLES, YOU SHOULD PROVIDE ME WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN YOU SIGN UP:

1) WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE DO YOU DRIVE?

2) DO YOU HAVE A BIKE-RACK, AND, IF SO, HOW MANY BIKES CAN IT CARRY? (INCLUDING YOUR OWN);

3)WHAT IS THE NEAREST TTC SUBWAY STATION TO YOUR RESIDENCE?

IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO DRIVE AND YOU WILL REQUIRE TRANSPORTATION TO THE EVENT FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR BICYCLE, YOU SHOULD PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN YOU SIGN UP:

1) WHAT IS YOUR RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS ? (NEEDED TO ARRANGE FOR POSSIBLE PICK UP AT YOUR RESIDENCE);

2) WHAT IS YOUR CELL-PHONE OR TELEPHONE NUMBER?

3) WHAT IS THE NEAREST TTC SUBWAY STATION TO WHERE YOU LIVE?

I WILL TRY TO SET PEOPLE UP WITH A RIDE/PASSENGER. IF YOUR TRANSPORTATION SITUATION CHANGES AFTER YOU HAVE REGISTERED (I.E. YOU AND YOUR BIKE NO LONGER REQUIRE A RIDE TO THE EVENT, OR YOU HAVE FOUND AN ALTERNATE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION), PLEASE LET ME KNOW, SO THAT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN DESIGNATED A TRANSPORTATION SPOT, I CAN RE-ASSIGN THAT SPOT TO SOMEONE ELSE.

IT IS ALSO HELPFUL IF YOU LET ME KNOW WHETHER YOU HAVE A "LADY'S BICYCLE" WITH A SLANTING UPPER-MIDDLE BAR BETWEEN THE HANDLES AND THE SEAT, AS THIS TYPE OF BIKE CANNOT BE CARRIED BY ALL BIKE RACKS.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU SIGN UP FOR THIS EVENT, PLEASE ENSURE, BEFORE THE DATE OF THE EVENT, THAT YOUR BIKE IS TUNED UP AND PROPERLY ADJUSTED FOR THE RIDE. AS THE RIDE IS A LONG ONE, WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY BREAK-DOWNS, ESPECIALLY IF, THROUGH PROPER BIKE MAINTENANCE, WE CAN AVOID THEM.

Required Items to Bring:
Bike, bike helmet, lots of water.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Lunch/snacks, camera.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:To get to the starting point for the ride (Chaffeys Lock), you must take Highway 401 East of Toronto. Stay on Highway 401 until you get to Kingston. You will pass the Sir John A. MacDonald Blvd. entrance into Kingston. Then you should look for a turning lane onto Highway 10 or "Perth Road" (which goes North but is aligned with Division St. to the South). Take Highway 10 (a.k.a. "Perth Road") North. You will turn east, onto Opinicon Rd., just after passing a place called "Perth Road" but before you get to Raymond Corners. Follow Opinicon Rd. until you get to Chaffeys Lock; do NOT turn on Darling Rd. or Brock Lake Rd. We will park our cars at the trail access point located 1 km west of the lock at the junction of Indian Lake and Opinicon Roads. There is a seasonal restaurant in the vicinity along the canal. Further directions and details will be provided closer to the date of the event.

Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):600Km
Carpool Departure Time: 8:00 AM
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $154.80 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Thursday, November 21, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:
Whether 9 people can actually participate in the event is contingent on whether there are enough cars going that can take both participants and their bicycles. Therefore, if you can carry additional passengers/bicycles with your vehicle, it is important for you to make this known when you sign-up. I will try to ensure that everyone is accommodated, on a first come, first serve basis.
