X-C Ski/Snowshoe Weekend at Bondi Village (1/17/2014)

Overview

Yes, we haven't had any snow yet and most of us are probably not thinking about ski season, but we have to get this one out early as we have to confirm the accommodation by mid November.

Join us for a weekend of cross-country skiing or showshoeing at Bondi Village Resort, near Algonquin Park, just south of Dwight.

Get up early and ski before breakfast; take a headlight and snowshoe after supper... Bondi Village has over 20 km. of trails on a private wilderness reserve. Trails vary in difficulty; each offers its own special micro-environment and natural features. Approximately 15 km. are groomed and track set for Nordic skiing. Snow- shoeing is allowed alongside the ski trails - just stay off the tracks! In winter, small groups of deer come right amongst the cottages, and on occasion, the local wolf pack will also come onto the property, although we're more likely to hear them than to actually see them. If the lake is sufficiently frozen, a skating rink may be cleared, so if you fancy skating, bring your skates.

Accommodation

We've booked The Lodge, a self-contained house featuring 6 bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, a fireplace, games room and library, amongst other amenities. Dinner on Saturday, and breakfasts on both Saturday and Sunday will be shared as a group, so we'll sort out a menu ahead of time and make sure anyone with dietary restrictions is taken into account.

Weekend itinerary

  • We will drive up to Bondi Village on Friday evening, with each carload stopping for dinner on the way (by consensus please...)
  • On Saturday, we have a choice of destinations, based on activity and a driver wanting to go to any particular location:
    • Skiing or showshoeing at the Village
    • Driving to Fen Lake in Algonquin - skiing only at this location
    • Driving to Arrowhead Park just north of Huntsville, to ski or snowshoe
  • On Sunday, again, groups can choose to ski or showshoe at Bondi, or go to either Fen Lake or Arrowhead
  • Each car-load will head back to Toronto late afternoon, getting back to Downsview around 8pm or so, depending on where they skied and how long the driver wants to stay out

NOTES:

  • Ski rentals are available at MEC or EuropeBound - they both have competitive weekend rates
  • There are NO ski rentals available at Bondi Village, but snowshoes can be rented

  • Skis, boots and poles and/or snowshoes
  • Gloves and hat
  • Waterproof jacket and pants
  • Fanny- or back-pack
  • Water bottle or thermos
  • Lunches and/or snacks for two days
  • Personal toiletries
  • Pyjamas - accommodation is in shared rooms!
  • Cash for carpool

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $129.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Thursday, January 30, 2025). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:

Menus and carpool arrangements will be worked out closer to the event date.


- Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the TOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
- When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with full refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where TOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refund of money if you cancel.
- We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines at all times while participating in TOC events.
