Introduction to Kayak/Canoe on the Humber River (7/2/2013)

Itinerary:
REMINDER - GREAT EVENT COMING UP! As we have many new members who are interested in our boating adventures but have never been on the water, don't have the confidence, or just need a refresher, the TOC has arranged a 30 minute intro to kayak or canoe followed by a 90 minute guided tour on the Humber River (through Toronto Adventures). Boat options are:

  • single kayaks
  • double kayaks
  • 2-person canoes
  • 3-person canoes

    Please follow the steps below:

  • register for the event
  • make your payment
  • email Julianne at luvtohike@hotmail and advise of your boat preference
  • if you are open to a 2-person or 3-person boat, please let me know
  • if you plan to attend with someone else and wish to be in a boat with them, please provide names of all members.


  • Required Items to Bring:
  • Wear comfortable, layered, outdoor clothing, water shoes, sturdy sandals or running shoes.
  • Rain gear is highly recommended
  • Towel in case you get wet
  • Waterproof bag(s)/camera case
  • Hat, sunglasses and camera
  • $2 - Voluntary TOC donation

  • A change of clothes, shoes and socks for the ride home.

  • How to Get There:
    Event Directions:TTC (Public Transit): (5-10 Minute Walk From Old Mill Station) 1) Go To Old Mill TTC Station 2) When you exit Old Mill Station turn left and walk to Bloor Street. 3) When you come to Bloor Street, turn left and walk about 75 metres to the start of the BRIDGE going over the Humber River. At the start of this bridge you will see on your left hand side STAIRS leading down to the river. 4) Go down these stairs, at the bottom of these stairs, straight ahead to your left, under the subway line you will see a parking lot. That is the Kayaking and Canoeing location.

    Driving: 1) Go to Maps.Google.Ca and Click �Get Directions� in the top left. 2) Type your location of departure in the A Column and �King�s Mill Park� in the B Column, then Click �Get Directions�. These directions will bring you to King�s Mill Park, as you enter the park you will see us on your left side, you can park in either of the parking lots to your left or right.

    PLEASE ARRIVE BY 6:15pm TO ALLOW TIME TO REGISTER WITH YOUR COORDINATOR AND TO ENSURE A 6:30PM START TIME.


    Notes:
    There is no carpool for this event, and everyone must meet at the venue.

    This event goes rain or shine; however, should the event be cancelled by the service provider, a full refund will be issued.
    - Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the TOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
    - When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with full refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where TOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refund of money if you cancel.
    - We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines at all times while participating in TOC events.

    Member Cost:$35.34/Person
    Cost Includes:Cost includes everything you need for your paddle including a 30 minute beginners lesson and a 90 minute scenic paddle down the slow-moving Humber River. Our price is based on $29.95 + HST ($3.89) + $1.50 transaction fee for a total of $35.34. (Regular price is $59.95 + HST).

    Being located in a transition zone between the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest Region in the north and the Carolinian or Deciduous Forest Region in the south, the Humber contains a variety of species common to both regions. Geological processes such as glaciation, erosion, flooding, and deposition have also contributed to the natural heritage value of the Humber River watershed. On this adventure we see plant and wildlife rarely seen in the city. We often see: Canada Geese, Swans, Ducks, White Egrets, Blue Heron, Night Heron, Cormorants, many types of Raptors, Beaver, Mink, Muskrat, Deer, Fox, Coyote, Raccoon, Salmon, Trout, Carp, Bass, Catfish, and many types of Turtles.
