Itinerary:

I'm running the Scotiabank Waterfront Half Marathon on Sunday the 16th, so this will be my last big training run before the event. All you runners, come on out and join me!

This is a great 10 KM route because it combines all the challenges of a good run. The distribution is about 2 km of flat ground, followed by a 2.5 km moderate downhill, then a 2.5 km moderate uphill and finally 3 km of flat ground to finish. It's about a 50/50 mix of urban sidewalk running and park running.

We start and end at Spadina subway station (which is conveniently located on both the east-west and north-south subway lines). The basic route is (click here for an interactive map of the route):

  • Run north on Spadina to Bernard
  • Run east on Bernard to Davenport, continue east to Belmont, continue east to Yonge.
  • Follow Rosedale Valley Road all the way to Bayview - this is a beautiful road to run on with a large tree canopy and nice wide little used sidewalk. Its basically a park with a road that runs through it. This is the downhill portion of the run.
  • At Bayview, we will take a short, 1 minute walking break as we turn around and run back up Rosedale Valley Road to Yonge. This is the uphill portion of the run.
  • Run north on Yonge to Ramsden Park.
  • Run across Ramsden Park to Avenue and Dupont. Run west on Dupont to Spadina. Run south on Spadina to the subway.

We will be running at a pace averaging 6 minutes per kilometer (or 10 km/hr). A little faster on the downhill, a little faster on the uphill. This is a reasonable and realistic running pace for anyone who has basic fitness and prior running experience. This run is not intended for absolute beginners. You should be confident in your ability to run 5 KM to attempt this 10 KM run. - Please get in touch with me if you have concerns about your ability to complete this event.

We will run as a group during the urban parts of the run. There will be an opportunity to spread out a little bit on Rosedale Valley Road but then we will return to a group run when we return to the urban area.

Because the route passes by Rosedale subway station, there will be two opportunities for participants to drop out - first, at the 2 KM mark if you find you are struggling to keep up with the group; and second, at the 7 KM mark if you find you are tired and don't want to complete the whole 10 KM.

NOTE: This run will go on rain or shine. The only reason for cancellation will be if there is a projected chance of a thunderstorm. I will check for this on Monday night. Please check your email the morning of the event. Also note, I will not have my cell phone with me during this event. I will have it until approximately 15 minutes prior to the start of the run. So please arrive on time.
