Itinerary:

A WEEKEND IN BIRDLAND

Please only sign up if you are 100% sure you can attend.
Priority will be given to people willing to drive and transport canoes.
If there is enough interest from the waiting list I will book another camping site.

We will be spending the weekend doing day paddles in Long Point World Biosphere reserve and Big Creek National Wildlife area, photographing migratory birds as they begin their long trek south for the winter. Long Point is a 40 km spit extending into Lake Erie that is on a major fly route for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, including water fowl, song birds and raptors as well as Monarch butterflies.

ITINERARY There will be no pre-trip meeting; carpool, food, paddling partners and other details will be worked out by phone and email.
Friday night – car pool from Kipling, stop at Complete Paddler to pick up canoes/kayaks. Dinner en route. Overnight at Turkey Point Provincial Park. Night hikes on park trails.
Saturday– Enthusiastic early morning rise (early morning is the best time for seeing wildlife and has the best light for photography). Quick breakfast using campstoves, spend the day paddling Long Point. Swimming (Lake Erie is the warmest of the great lakes, swimming is still nice in the fall). Shared potluck dinner on Saturday night.
Sunday- Yay! Another enthusiastic early rise, quick breakfast and pack up campsite. Drive to Big Creek National Wildlife area for paddling + photography. Return to GTA late afternoon and return boats.

FOR EXPERIENCED PADDLERS ONLY: You must be self sufficient at kayaking or canoeing as no instruction will be given. We may be paddling through bogs and or marshes and or (sheltered) open water on Lake Erie. Please email me with answers to the following questions when signing up:
What canoeing courses have you taken (if any)?
Can you do an assisted rescue if another canoe capsizes?
List canoe trips you have been on in the past two years including routes and distances (if any).
How well can you swim?

RENTALS: You will be responsible for your own canoe/kayak rental from The Complete Paddler.

WEATHER: This event will go ahead rain or shine. Anyone cancelling because of rain will get an automatic no show. There are many hiking trails in the area and in the wetlands, we will not be going near water if there is a risk of thunderstorms.
