Itinerary:
Please see the route description here. This route is also covered in Kevin Callan's general book on Ontario.

We will meet for Thursday night at Loon's Landing where I have reserved campsites for us. The drive is 325km, and should be approx. 4 hours.

Friday morning we begin the four day and 74km loop around Eighteen Mile Island on the Lower French, then North Channel, Upper French, and finally the South Channel inside French River Provincial Park.

We will purchase backcountry permits from the lodge. You will be responsible for obtaining your own canoe. The only local outfitter is the Grundy Lake Supply Post: contact Jim Moore at (705) 383-2251. He will deliver, however, the canoes are nothing special. If you want either light weight or performance, you might want to rent from The Complete Paddler near Islington and the Gardiner Expressway, or the Toronto MEC. Bring at least $100 cash for these expenses.

The canoe trip itself is four days, including 12 or 13 easy obstacles. There is at least one true portage, some lining, and basic whitewater. In low water conditions all of the rapids may be run by beginners. Of course there is always the option of portaging. There is no open lake travel. This trip is rated for novice whitewater paddlers. You should expect to spend a minimum of 5 hours a day actually paddling. The club policy is that PFDs must be worn and zipped at all times while on the water.

We will camp for the second night at a Class II rapid and easy play spot. The running line is located close to shore, and the downstream areas also allow for self rescues. If you have never tried whitewater before, the third day will be full of new experiences.

We will organize each boat as a unit responsible for your own equipment and food, sharing a tent, and the canoe rental. Each pair must obtain a canoe. The coordinators will not be doing this for you.

Canoe trip equipment: A tent, stove, water bottles, food, proper rain gear, suitable boots, a backpack, sleeping bag and pad.
