Itinerary:

Happy Halloween! We will be backpacking the Montgomery Creek Loop in the Ganaraska Wilderness Halloween Weekend. Costumes are encouraged!

This loop backpack is in the Wilderness Section of the Ganaraska Trail. The Ganaraska wilderness is noted for its roughness and the poorly marked nature of the trail (it is not unusual in the wilderness section for trail markers to be vandalized and moved; markers can be painted on rocks where plants have grown over).

We will be heading to the Victoria Bridge Access point and will aim to hike out along Montgomery Creek. The loop is only 12k but is a great chance to see one of Ontario's southernmost wilderness parks (Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands; this is a non-operating park with no services). We will travel to the park Saturday from Toronto and return Sunday evening.

We will be hiking between 2-3k/hr. Keep in mind that hikers are rarely as fast backpacking as they are dayhiking! This trip is open to active TOC members and new backpackers are welcome as long as they have appropriate dayhiking experience. We will be making our campsite along the creek approx. 5-7k into the hike. We will explore the surrounding area as time permits.

Along the way, we will traverse the forest, ravines, beaver dams and lakes. If we're lucky, we may see signs of bears, wolves, foxes, or actually see rare five-lined skinks. Note that there will be some beaver dam crossings; hikers must be prepared for wet feet!

Note that the coordinator's two dogs may be on this trip. Any member wishing to bring their dogs MUST clear this with the coordinator.

Participants should have basic backpacking gear - lightweight gear - such as a backpack and sleeping bag. Gear such as tents and stoves will be shared in common.

A mandatory pre-meeting will be scheduled to discuss the trip and shared gear.
