Itinerary:

Come and discover Bruce Peninsula Provincial Park in the winter.

In the heart of a World Biosphere Reserve, the 'Bruce' is a place of global significance. The massive, rugged cliffs of the park are inhabited by thousand year old cedar trees, overhanging the crystal clear waters of Georgian Bay. The park is comprised of an incredible array of habitats from rare alvars to dense forests and clean lakes. Together these form a greater ecosystem - the largest remaining chunk of natural habitat in southern Ontario. The Niagara Escarpment runs from Niagara Falls to Tobermory. It forms the backbone of the Peninsula and shapes the northern boundary of most of the park, providing the park with some of its most spectacular scenery.

We will be driving to the Tobermory area on Friday morning (yes you must take Friday off work) and then setting up camp in the Cyprus Lake campground for the first night. On Saturday we hike to the Grotto and down the trail to Storm Haven where we will spent the night. We will be hiking (snowshoeing, if required) at a moderate pace (2 km per hour), on trails with some bushwhacking. Sunday we'll head back to Cyprus Lake campground by bushwacking and some trails. The plan is to cover ~15 km total loop over the 3 days (2 camps) tailored to the local snow conditions and group pace. We plan to exit the park on Sunday afternoon and drive back to Toronto.

This trip is open to moderate experienced hiker/snowshoeing/campers with cold weather experience that have the proper gear.

A mandatory pre-trip meeting will be held at Chalker's Bistro (Marlee & Glencairn, 247 Marlee Avenue North York)on Tuesday, Nov 17, 2009 at 6:30pm. The meeting will review personnel and shared gear and other trip details
