Curious about Kurosawa? Beguiled by Bergman? Join us for Cinematheque Ontario's summer of Hollywood and foreign film classics! Here is your chance to see some of the movies that appear every film critic's Top 100 list. They could be the best films you'll ever see ... or you might leave wondering what all the fuss is about. Either way, we'll have fun exploring the classics.
The first film in the series is the 1950 gem All About Eve, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Winner of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, All About Eve is a classic tale of ruthless ambition and back-stabbing bitchery behind the theatrical curtain. Ageing Broadway legend Margo Channing (Bette Davis) takes sweet and naive Eve Harrington (Ann Baxter) under her wing, unaware of lengths to which Eve will go to carve out a stage career of her own. The film also features an early appearance by Marilyn Monroe, as well as Davis' most famous line (best quoted while throwing back a dry martini): "Fasten your seatbelts ... it's going to be a bumpy night." Brilliantly written and flawlessly acted, All About Eve is 16th on the American Film Institute's list of "100 Greatest American Movies of All Time." We will meet at 6:00 p.m. at the entrance to Jackman Hall. The screening begins at 6:30 p.m. Following the movie, we will head to Baldwin Avenue for dinner/drinks and conversation, film-related or otherwise. Please note that members are responsible for purchasing their own tickets to ALL screenings. If you are planning on seeing more than one film in our Cinema Classics Series, you may want to consider a Cinematheque membership. Tickets, as well as memberships, can be purchased online by following the links on the Cinematheque Ontario website, or by phone at 416-968-FILM (3456). As every Cinematheque event I've attended has been pretty much sold out, you are strongly advised to buy your tickets sooner rather than later! Other films in our series include: Rashomon, The Lady Vanishes, The Seventh Seal, and The Bicycle Thieves. | |||||||
