QUESTIONS

Because of the difficulty of this hike, when you sign up you MUST answer
the following questions in the AFFIRMATIVE. (If you don't, you will be moved to the waiting list.)
You can copy and paste the questions into the notes section of the sign up page,
then type YES beside each one (after reading the question).

  1. Do you realize that you MUST answer these questions in the notes box on the sign up page? (If you think this is a silly question, you are one of the few who actually read the details :-)
  2. Can you hike 36 km?
  3. Can you maintain an average pace of about 5.5+ km/hr?
  4. Have you recently hiked at least 20 km at this pace?
  5. Will you bring enough water for yourself?
  6. Will you make sure you understand how to get to the hike or carpool, before the day of the event?

the first 2 km will be along the beach instead of the paved trail.
for that 2 km, a steep, slippery embankment separates the beach from the paved trail, so we will be committed to the beach
the beach starts out sandy, then changes to small stones, then changes to rocks the size of basketballs.
it will keep us hopping. make sure you have strong ankles! and good treads.
The going is quite challenging, and we will have to find our way up a small embankment to get back onto the trail.
Get ready for a fun challenge!!
on the way back we will stick to the trail, and skip the challenging 2 km on the beach.

DON'`T get left behind! Please arrive early, we will start promptly, and I will turn off my cell once we begin hiking.

This is the route we will take.

  • start from the east side of Whitby Harbour
  • head east along the Waterfront Trail
  • walk through several parks and nature reserves along the shoreline
  • walk past Oshawa Habour
  • walk to McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve - Second Marsh Wildlife Area
  • have lunch somewhere on the beach
  • continue on the beach to Darlington Prov Park
  • turn around go back to the start
  • we will stop for a few short refreshment breaks along the way
