Let's hope that the weather cooperates this time and that we really will be able to cycle through cornfields inside the City of Toronto. And to cycle through cornfields in York and Durham Regions too… along a route with little traffic. There is a short section with a fair amount of traffic when we cross the 401. Along about 5 km we will be cycling on (pretty good) dirt roads. In fact, I felt safe flying down a hill at 35 km/hr on my street bike with its skinny tires - think well maintained rail trail, but much wider. The route has four or five decent sized hills, nothing too daunting, but it is not flat either.
We will meet at Union Station at the GO ticket wickets in the lower level - near Bay Street, at 9:50am about 20 minutes before the train leaves. We will buy return tickets and use the elevator to get our bikes to the platform. Ideally, there should only be a maximum of 4 bikes to a carriage, two at each end. Bikes are places behind and in front of the 2 vertical steel poles, next to the seats as you walk in the door. Please allow passengers to get on board first. After a 30-minute train ride we will disembark at the Rouge Hill station If you would like, you can meet us at Rouge Hill GO Station at 10:40 am We will ride north through eastern Scarborough through rural Markham and into Pickering Township. I will provide maps so that those who want to go faster can. On the way back, we will stop in the village of Whitevale to eat our lunch. If we are in luck the ice cream stand will be open. We will then head back to Rouge Hill GO Station. We will probably catch the 3:07 or the 4:07 pm train back to Union station. If we have time the inclination we can explore the nearby Rouge beach on Lake Ontario.
