Hunting mushrooms is akin to playing the lottery. Some days you go out and Lady Luck is smiling on you all day. Some days … nothing. But unlike the lottery, looking for mushrooms doesn’t ever leave you in the red. At the very least, you get out, get some fresh air and some exercise! There are some ways to increase the odds, though, of mushroom hunting. Mushrooms often emerge after rain. They tend to appear at certain times of the year. So we’re going to increase our odds by heading out late summer, and after a week of rain! The forecast is calling for rain and cloud between now and the weekend. We’ll head out on Sunday, when there’s a chance for some sun, which should make our pictures as pretty as they can be! Our hike will be taking place in the Rouge Valley, east of Toronto near the Zoo. We’ll start with the mushroom photo hike, along the Mast and Riverside trails, a loop of about 5.5 km. This portion of the hike will be dedicated to finding and photographing mushrooms. I’ll be bringing along my mushroom ID book, too. I expect us to spend 1.5-2 hours on this section of the hike. After our mushroom foray, we’ll hike north along the Orchard and Vista trails. This will take us through a wetlands area, where we may see lots of waterfowl, and can take pictures if we do. However, all in all, this 3.5 km loop will be at a quicker pace. After our hike, we’ll divide car pools into who wants to go for a bite to eat and who doesn’t. Notes:
