Itinerary: | |||||||
Explore the rugged beauty of Massasauga Provincial Park. Massasauga Provincial Park is an archipelago of islands situated on the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, south of Parry Sound, Ontario. The park covers 13,050 hectares of Georgian Bay's shoreline and is accessible only by water. Granite outcrops, dotted with wind sculpted white pines, will set the stage as we make our way through the park's small inland lakes and waterways. We will drive to Massasauga on Friday morning ( you will need to take the day off) and start our trip at the Three Legged Lake access point. We will canoe to Spider Lake, where we will set up camp at one of the lakeside campsites. On Day 2, we will explore Georgian Bay where there will be some big open water paddling and some narrow water ways with steep cliffs on either side. We will paddle back to Three Legged Lake and drive back to Toronto on Sunday. Trip notes: This is an introductory level canoe camping event suitable for people with a bit of camping experience and interested in canoe tripping. Paddling will be primarily flatwater on small lakes and in relatively protected areas of Georgian Bay. Previous paddling experience is helpful, but not absolutely necessary. We will try and pair experienced paddlers with relatively inexperienced people. Overnight camping experience is helpful, but again not absolutely necessary. In this case, you should be prepared to borrow or rent the necessary gear. There will be a minimum of 3 short portages: 370m, 90m and 165m. Dogs allowed, dog owners should be prepared to provide their own transportation. Trip requirements: overnight/backcountry/car camping experience, comfortable paddling in a canoe for several hours, able to carry 35lbs plus along a portage trail. If I am not familiar with your backcountry/paddling background, please enter details of your experience in the “notes” section when registering. UPDATE: Mandatory pre-trip planning meeting scheduled for Monday July 19, 7:15pm at Chalker’s Pub (247 Marlee Ave). At the meeting, we will decide canoe, gear and food arrangements. | |||||||
