It was an absolutely gorgeous day - still hot but not too humid, sunny and the colours are just starting to turn - making for some wonderful tableaus of yellow and green and purple. But the adventure started just by trying to get to the park - we were turned back on the road because it was blocked off for the Terry Fox run. We politely asked the policeman how to get to Shorthills - go back to 'The Q' he said ... how rude we thought, all the way back to the QEW that wasn't very helpful at all.
But after some creative driving we found the place we were supposed to be and set off. At a well marked out fork in the road it was suggested that we should turn right and I said, no, the arrow is pointing to this trail on the left. So off we walked, and walked and walked. Soon it became clear that we were very confused where we were, so we asked a few passerbys where we were. Oh, this is Decew road, they said pointing to our map and pronouncing it 'DeeKew'. Oooooh. It turns out that we weren't the only confused hikers that day as we met another confused couple who at least pointed us back to the fork in the road
Another unmarked fork in the road later that afternoon meant another detour, making our 15K hike into 18K and a good lesson in using your compass. None of it really mattered, as we had a wonderful day. We were told by some locals to return to see the waterfall in the winter, so we'll probably return here as a cold weather hike, now we know how to get here!
