Sat, Feb 27 2010 - Early Bird East End Excursion (View Original Event Details)

A fairly mild, quiet, morning greeted us as we convened at the Main Subway entrance. After a few folks made the Timmies run we we soon able to proceed.
We headed South on Main, then past the Ted Reeve arena where NHL alumni will be taking on union workers in a fund raising game for MS research on March 13 with $5 tickets.
Then we soon found ourselves at the upper entrance to Glen Stewart Park. The neat thing was that even a few long-time area residents on our walk hadn't known about this hidden treasure. We talked about the City's Discovery Walks programs and how the signage could definitely use some refreshing.
Then it was South to Queen and across to the R.C. Harris filtration plant. Along the way we passed the historic Fox Cinema and iconic Golden Gate restaurant.
After admiring the water plant from the outside we got an extra special treat. Turns out that TOC member Jamie is involved with water engineering and was able to give us a fantastic, but still accessible, breakdown on the procedures that take place within the facility. He’s going to see about getting us access to an interior tour of the building in the future.
Then we headed West along the boardwalk, through a spooky underground tunnel, and past the remnants of the Gardiner from when it used to continue further East. We passed the Don River, cut across the Distillery District, and explored how Adelaide might benefit from becoming a 2-way street.
Finally we said our goodbyes. The walk was a little longer than expected at just over 14KM but we had no dropouts and only Woody seemed tired by the end.
