This hike was set up as a two part hike. Maps where handed out at Downview. The first hike was to Old Baldy Conservation area (just north of Eugenia). We all arrived at the trail head at around 10:15 am. Good start. The plan was to have a short hike to the lookout at Old Baldy and then return by a small loop trail (3km round trip). We hiked in the 1.5 km and spent about 10 minutes taking in the views and taking photos. About half the group decided (for some reason?) to keep hiking south away from the cars (for extra training mileage I guess!). The group that stayed with me returned to the cars and wait for the inevitable phone call. While we waited we watch half a dozen turkey vultures circling above riding the winds. For the second hike we drove down to Eugenia Falls area and started our 22 km loop. Have a look at the photos. Eugenia falls is just a trickle of a stream today, due to the hydro electric activities upstream. But the drop off and Cuckoo valley are impressive. If you look closely at the photo you can still see ice at the base. We headed south and had lunch at a nice small creek. The water was cold and Misty really liked it. Hogg's Falls was our next stop to take photos and wait for everyone. Ash was falling off the pace and our schedule was slipping so we decided to cut about 2 km off the loop by cutting across the river. Have a look at the photos for some river crossing adventures! Misty made sure the log was wet for everyone. Everybody seemed to make it across ok. Back on the trail heading northward, around Johnson's Sideroad, a thunder shower let loose and a few people got wet! Sorry no pictures! The trail became fairly slick for the next 4 km. However by Graham's Hill the rain stop and we where about 3/4 around the loop. We could see the hydro-electric penstocks (water pipes) on top of Campbell's Hill. Down the hill and up the other side (Campbell's Hill) and back in the woods heading south for another 4km, we made it to the parking lot by 7 pm. A quick change into dry clothes and a text message and a phone call later we found Ash at the base of Campbell's Hill. Next mission. Off to find a resturant. Eugenia - NO. Flesherton - NO. South Grey Inn & Restaurantý (just south of Flesherton) did the trick. It was a small place but the beer was cold and the service and food was good. With the 2 hour drive back to Downview that was a full day! See you next time. Gary
