Itinerary:

Sea Kayak around the rugged shorelines of the Franklin Islands near Snug Harbor in Georgian Bay

About Ontario’s Georgian Bay: This biosphere reserve encompasses the largest island archipelago of the North American Great Lakes. Known locally as “The Thirty Thousand Islands”, it is a complex association of bays, inlets, sounds, islands and shoals lying along the edge of the Canadian Shield bedrock which rises as low lying hills and ridges on the adjacent mainland. The complex topography of the eastern coast of Georgian Bay results in a mix of open waters, sheltered bays, coastal wetlands, exposed bedrock shores, sandy and cobble beaches and island forests. Sea kayakers recognize the thirty thousand islands as some of the best paddling in the world!

This event is co-hosted and will be guided by the famous paddle sport and kayak outfitter, WHITE SQUALL PADDLING of Georgian Bay(rated by National Geographic as the fourth best paddling outfitter in the world!)

This event is best suited to those with some previous kayaking experience, as we will be in the challenging open waters of Georgian Bay and expect to paddle for about 5 hours.

We’ll begin on land by selecting and reviewing our paddle and safety gear followed by a brief discussion of kayaking, paddle sport skills and water safety protocols. Another review of the kayak and paddling techniques will be discussed once on the water.

With about 16 participants - we'll divide into 2 groups(eg. beginner and advanced) and have 2 skilled and experienced guides from White Squall Paddle Centre guide us on our day paddle. Both groups may paddle adjacent or near to each other to allow for differences in skill and speed of paddling. There will be opportunities to stop, rest and take pictures along the way and lunch and "washroom" break will be on land on the Franklin Islands. This lunch break would be a good opportunity for swimming.

  • You WILL be required to tip into the lake and get soaked doing the "wet-exit" - basically, a controlled tipping over and under the kayak and calmly falling out. This will be performed near to land.
  • No swimming skills are necessary to participate in this event, although it is a very useful skill to have especially in water sport environments.
  • Life jacket is to be worn at all times.
  • Our guides will always remain the lead and sweep paddlers of this group.
  • A MUST HAVE - 2L of water/sport drink.
  • Bring your own lunch.

    Please note and review:

This event is on a FIRST PAY basis - your spot is ONLY CONFIRMED if your payment is received by the cut-off date - people on the waiting list who pay in advance will be given priority and MOVED from the waiting list to a confirmed spot after the cut-off date. First-pay, First-serve!

  • An option to share a tandem kayak(2 seats/2 persons) can be provided. (Email me with your request for this option. However, price remains the same for each person sharing).
  • Use can bring and use your own boat/gear but there is NO reduction in price.
  • This will be a full and long day out - leaving very early from the carpool and returning to Toronto very late in the evening - there is no real option to leave the paddle and/or return to land or Toronto early.
  • It is highly recommended that we have a social dinner in Parry Sound(15 minutes nearby) after the paddle and prior to returning to Toronto. This will allow for a short rest, food, carpool payments, etc.
