Itinerary:

I like to pick mature names for my events.

This event is aimed at new backpackers/those new to the backcountry, BUT experienced hikers. Your hiking experience will be reviewed and confirmed in order for you to attend this event.

Is owning backpacking gear a must? Not necessarily! We'll share gear where possible (helps keep the weight down too!) and you can always rent gear from MEC or Europe Bound.

As this trip is aimed at those new to backpacking and backcountry trips, the pre-meeting is mandatory (date to be discussed with the group).

We will depart Friday night for Killarney Provincial Park, southwest of Sudbury near the shores of Georgian Bay. We should arrive late in the evening/night, and will set up camp in the main campground at George Lake.

Saturday morning we will head out to the La Cloche Silhouette trail, and backpack 15k to our campsite on Heaven Lake - high in the La Cloche Range with a view of much of the park and out to Georgian Bay.

Along the way we will pass lakes, marsh, beaver dams and climb up into the La Cloche Mountains and up The Crack, a famous....you guessed it, crack.....filled with boulders that the trail climbs straight up. The view from the ridges on the top is amazing.

Because I should've reserved this sooner (mea culpa!) we aren't able to basecamp; Sunday will be spent exploring the area before heading about 4k back along the trail to Proulx Lake, a beautiful green/blue lake surrounded by white quarzite - it is beautiful, and has a great lookout over the lake by the campfire!

Monday we will head back along the trail (approx. 12k) to the cars and to Toronto.

This trail has steep climbs and goes through challenging terrain! Many people new to Killarney don't appreciate the elevation changes; Algonquin is not a good comparator. You must be a strong and proven hiker to come on this trip, but this is a great chance to learn about backcountry camping and backpacking if you haven't before. Pack weight WILL matter. We will hike as a group, at the pace of the slowest hiker.

Note: Jenn M may bring one or both of her dogs on this trip. Anyone wishing to bring their dog MUST speak to Jenn M first.
