Itinerary:

CHARLESTON LAKE - BACKPACKING WEEKEND

This will be an easy backpacking weekend with the emphasis on watching for wildlife and enjoying the scenery. Charleston Lake Provincial Park is home to a rich diversity of plant and animal species, mostly due to the unusual mix of Canadian Shield geology in a southern location and warmer climate.

The total backpacking loop is only about 10km but we may take a few side trips along the way. Time permitting we will also do a day hike along some of the Park's interior trails. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

I've booked Bob's Cove, which has a trail leading down to Slim Bay, home to a nesting site for loons. We will also take some time to look for pitch pine - a very rare species of pine, as well as aboriginal rock paintings and caves. The park is also home to the black rock snake - a harmless boa constrictor as well as red-shouldered hawks and southern flying squirrels, as well as beavers, white-tailed deer, fishers and mink.

Note: this is not a car camping weekend. Participants should own or be prepared to borrow/rent basic lightweight gear, including: layered clothing for hiking and at camp, rain gear, gaiters, extra socks, hiking boots, sleeping bag and sleeping mat, back pack, cooking pot/lid/cup/bowl/spoon, water filter/tablets, whistle, basic first aid kit, sunscreen, bug repellent and headlamp. There are patches of poison ivy throughout the park. Where possible, gear such as tents and stoves will be shared.

There will be a mandatory pre-meeting for this trip to discuss gear, food and carpooling.

Due to the number of people on the waiting list this event will be run on a "first pay" basis.
This means your spot is ONLY CONFIRMED if your payment is received by the cut-off date - people on the waiting list who pay in advance will be given priority and MOVED from the waiting list to a confirmed spot after the cut-off date.
