Sat, Feb 2 2008 - Snowshoe Awenda Provincial Park Trails (View Original Event Details)
|
After a wild few days of weather including snow and wind, the conditions were perfect for a day of snowshoeing. We left Downsview Station and quickly got on the road, heading north to Awenda Provincial Park. Luckily, the roadS were clear and traffic was light! Three of the four cars arrived within minutes of each other. The fourth car soon contacted me, saying "we're half way between Wasaga and Collingwood, where do we go now?". They had followed the wrong highway, and were still quite a ways away. With my snowshoes. All of the others headed out on the pristine trails, unmarked by anyone else in the past few days. As they moved along, the group split; François, Vitaly and Nicole bushwacked their own path through the forest, Mark, Lars and Ray headed to the beach, and Gabe Alison and Christina explored the trails. Finally the last car arrived, and Perkin, Lillian, Michele and I headed down to the beach via another route to catch up with everyone. The view of Georgian Bay was breathtaking, as the waves had created massive ice dunes along the shore, and all of the massive rocks were covered by snow and ice. It was an unbelieveable sight, reminding us of the arctic (and we joked that we could photoshop a polar bear into our pictures to convince people!). We returned to the Trail Head, where there was a shelter and we quickly got a fire going thanks to Michelle and had a late lunch. Vitaly, who likes to do things the hard way, managed to start his own fire outside with birchbark and some flint! After an exciting day of exploring the trails, and warming up around the woodstove, we all headed back to the city.
