Write Up:
- An excellent hike!
- we kept up a good pace
- there was a good deal of mud and large puddles on the trail from
snow melt which had not drained yet
- along the way we saw a large pond with a log in it. there were
about 12 turtles sunning on the log
- we saw several tents along the way where people were camping
- we saw a couple of places where there was still some snow
- the hike leader (me) made a snowball about 8" in diameter and put
it on a tree stump beside the trail
- on the way back (3 hrs later) the snowball was about 2" in
diameter. the air temp was about 18°C
- we had to cross a couple of beaver dams. 1 hiker slipped and got 1
leg wet up to about her knee. had she slipped a bit more, she would
have gone right into the beaver pond!
-
- For Future Reference:
- 9:50 started hiking
- to the atv trail 6 mins, then to the bridge 7 mins
- walked to the bridge over the waterfalls
- walked about 2 km past the bridge, turned around
- stopped for 20 min lunch break about 20 mins before the narrows
- walked to the narrows (no shortcut)
- several hikers descended the very challenging route down to the
rapids
- the rapids is the water draining from McCrae Lake into Georgian
Bay
- it was about 20 feet wide, several feet deep and flowing quickly
- when I hiked there last fall, the "rapids" were 2 feet wide and
inches deep. we were able to jump across it
- not today
- walked to the Crow’s Nest Lookout (took the shortcut)
- see pic at top right of this page. pic taken by arnie from the
lookout
- spent about 10 minutes at the lookout
- the shortcut took about 5 - 7 mins to walk)
- 4:30 got back to the cars
