Rock Paper Scissors Championships 2007

So the Legend goes as follows: One day, a certain volunteer by the name of Jenn M posted in the TOC
forum an event that was happening locally, something that would have brought a little chuckle to the rest of
the forum dwellers. The link took us to a site advertising the upcoming Rock Paper Scissors World
Championships being held in Toronto that year. Rhonda, the beloved creator of the sacred Outdoor Club
website and Albertan (don’t hold it against her) was dared to fly to Toronto to cheer Jenn on if she (Jenn)
competed in the Championships. Little did Jenn know that Rhonda was going to seriously take her up on
the offer, and the rest is history (that you can find Here.).

Rhonda and the rest of us had waaaaaaay too much fun at the Championships that we immediately agreed
o do again this year, and this time, we would be better organized and ready for the debauchery that masks
itself as the RPS Championships! We assembled a Team of players, 3 from Calgary, Maureen, Joel and
Rhonda, and 2 from Toronto, Jenn P and Jason. We created T-shirts for team ‘Runs with Scissors’ and
also made some for the groupies there to support us!

We were a lean mean, fighting machine, decked out in the finest looking T-shirts this side of 49th parallel!
We studied our Gambits and mastered our strategies! A quick team huddle and we were set to take on
the world! And yes, the World is represented quite well at these tournaments, last year’s champion was a
Brit, and this year he was dressup as a British Admiral. Other colourful characters included a Hulk Hogan
wannabe, A Giant Rat that said he was really a bunny with a rat tail sticking out of his mouth, various Elvis
impersonators, Gladiators, Knights, Bukkake Girls, and the venerable Captain Morgan himself!

Here is a video of Captain Morgan Entering the Building!

The first round was divided up into 3 waves, and all of us competing in the first wave. We split up and
prepared for the challenge ahead. We had already lost one member of our team, suspicions being she may
have been poisoned by ‘Team Rocked Your Mom’, but we could not prove it, and had to hope we could
eliminate them if we ever ran into them in competition. Rhonda first opponent was a Boy Scout (literally),
who obviously didn’t know how to handle a real woman, and went down in tears after his premature finish.
Joel took on the rat/rabbit man in his first match up, and quickly exterminated the annoying critter. Jenn did
not fare as well though and was unceremoniously eliminated from the event (her competition mysteriously
disappeared later that evening…). Jason was all business and dispatched his American counterpart in a
hard fought match that came down to the last throw.

Jason Taking out the Competition in Round 1

Unfortunately, Rhonda lost the next match to a paper pushing journalist, and Joel suffered the same fate.
Jason tried his best as the last man standing for ‘Runs with Scissors’ but sadly, could not overcome the Big
Man from down South. While slightly dejected, we turned our attention to the next possible cash cow,
Pimping out Jenn! Jenn has an amazing eye for picking weak Johns that would be easy to beat, and we
merely herded the little lambs so they could drop their money, tuck tail, and cry. As successful as we were
at bringing in the cheddar, we still wanted to play for the big bucks, so a lucky break gave us a chance to
re-enter the competition – 20 new competition slots became available for the 3rd and final wave of round
one, the cost? $30 RPS Bucks that we had in spades thanks to Jenn putting out for the team! We gave her
the honour of carrying on for RWS, but sadly, this was not our day. We contented ourselves for the rest of
evening by drinking heavily (or was that just me?) and competing against other RPS champ wannabes for
fake money, real laughs and a whole lot of glory!!

Jenn Re-enters the Competition in Wave 3

Thanks Rhonda and Joel for coming all the way from Calgary and making it another memorable event, and
hopefully next year, we might hit critical mass and go all the way!
