July 1, 2007: “Hamilton West to Brantford Bike Ride” (81 km)
Harry and I headed out for a long ride on the Hamilton-Brantford Rail-Trail on Canada Day. On the way to Hamilton, we were stuck in some very slow traffic on the QEW, but we nonetheless managed to start our ride by about 12:30 p.m. The trail was in good condition, though a bit dry and dusty. We averaged about 18 km/hr and actually road a slightly longer distance than expected: 81 km. The highlight of the day was encountering two very young deer in the middle of the trail on our way back to Hamilton (though we also encountered some rather cute goats and some lovely horses). When we came upon the deer, we brought our bikes to a halt and enjoyed the pleasure of the moment. While trying to be as still and quiet as possible, I did manage to take a few pictures. Have a look at them. The deer did not appear threatened in any way by our presence; in fact, at one point, they actually came rather close to us. It was magical. Thanks to Harry for being such a good riding companion.
