June 09/07 This was my second TOC event and my first as a member and luckily today was a perfect day for a hike, sunny and warm with a slightly cool breeze. We set out at 10:15am from Downsview station with 15 of us in four cars for the 40-minute drive to Hole-In-The-Wall, at Limehouse, for a hike and a picnic; we were back at Downsview at 2:45pm.

The drive was nice and it gave us a chance to chat and get to know a bit about each other since many of us were new to each other and to the club.

We parked at the baseball diamonds south of 22nd Side Road and followed the Black Creek side trail from the main Bruce Trail. Min, our fearless leader, lead us without hesitation, past the hoards of mosquitoes, along the trail in the direction away from the main attraction so that we would finish the hike with the most dramatic section of the trail, which is the Hole-In-The-Wall.

The trail is beautiful and fairly easy going in most places, winding along Black Creek, although the previous nights storm had left quite a number of large trees across the trail, at least 7.

Our first option for a picnic spot was right beside the creek and although it was a beautiful spot we might have been eaten alive. We hiked to the ruins of the lime kilns where we feasted on our potluck picnic, which was well received and enjoyed by all. Ping’s marinated hardboiled eggs were a real treat and a big hit with all, as was Hanna’s bean salad. The most popular part of the picnic seemed to be the homemade peanut butter cookies, which I had three of.

The climb through the hole-in-the-wall and seeing all of the rock fissures was thoroughly enjoyed by all and was a nice end to the hike.

Thanks to Min for organizing the event and to everyone for sharing their feast.

Cheers,
Don
