Write Up:

For our third annual trek to the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival we were graced with a sunny and warmish day. We knew we were close to the festival when we spotted maple syrup, maple butter and other fine maple products being sold by countless Mennonite farmers set up along the road on our drive into town.

We took a tractor wagon ride into town from the parking lot (a far cry from the Toronto life of TTC subway shuttle bus rides). After the group dispersed to explore the festival and find their own version of a pancake breakfast (or a large BBQ drumstick), we came together as a team for the 16km hike to the Kissing Bridge (the last remaining covered wooden bridge in Ontario, don’tca know) and back again. Along the way we found a warm church basement for a home cooked meal, warm beverages and delicious desserts in West Montrose (not West Montuse).

On the return journey we found the frozen trail we had taken turning to mud, but with the sun out and our veins coursing with maple-powered energy nothing could stop us.

We arrived back at the start of our journey, the base of the pet food factory, a Canadian flag majestically flapping in the breeze from the top. Goodbyes were said, but only until the next hike…
