Mono Cliff Park Hike on April 21, 2007

April is not the cruelest month at the TOC. On Saturday, April 21, 2007, about 31 eager hikers went on 12-13 km hike at Mono Cliffs Provincial Park. The weather was sunny and ideal. The hikers, looking very much like happy survivors of a long, grey winter and a somewhat nippy early spring, were a friendly and talkative bunch. There was a nice mixture of new and old TOC members, and while the group was large, it was my impression that a fair amount of mingling took place during the hike and afterwards, such that we all engaged both in exercise and stimulating social conversation.

At the start of the hike, Kumari, Sivanny’s “sister”, I mean “mother”, set the pace and led the group. Kumari is an avid hiker and she goes at a good, steady pace. I had the feeling that, were she and I on a 100 kilometer hike, she would make it to the finish line, and I would still be at about the 60-kilometre mark.

The thing about hiking at Mono Cliffs is that one first has to get there. The road directions are a little bit confusing. Even with my trusted navigator, Paul, in the passenger seat, we took a couple of wrong turns before arriving at the trail.

And one can get lost again even after one has arrived, especially if the map one is relying upon is not a very good one and the trail is poorly or confusingly blazed. Unfortunately, I did lead the group off the marked trail a couple of times. Fortunately, we bumped into someone who regularly walks at Mono Cliffs. He was able to lead us back to where we wanted to be.

We were able to hike all but the Southlier Trail. Sivanny and Kumari stayed behind to do that portion of the trail as well, and it was apparently worth their time and effort.

Upon returning to Toronto, several of us went to the Boston Pizza just north of Odomo on the Allen, where we indulged in food and refreshments.
