Write Up:
First I want to thank Jim for posting this event and for co-hosting it with me. Everyone had arrived on time and we were able to find good seats right away. And although this film has been out for a while, the theatre still filled up a bit. And I believe that it's probably due to all the buzz it received from its Oscar nomination for best picture and its Golden Globe win for best foreign language film.

Anyone who is familiar with Clint Eastwood's previous films will appreciate the intense emotions that this film evokes. According to the film's web site, this story is based on recently unearthed letters written by Japanese soldiers who were stationed and fought at Iwo Jima during WWII. I was personally interested in seeing the different perspective that this film gives on this historic battle as it shows us the some of the faces and voices of individual Japanese soldiers.

While Gerry felt that the movie was bit long, I do believe that everyone agreed that this move has the same emotional intensity as Eastwood's previous films ('Unforgiven', 'Mystic River' & 'Million Dollar Baby'). While I recommend this film, I will caution that it does not hide the hideous nature (both visual and emotional) of this battle. After the movie, we all walked over to Spring Rolls for dinner and continued lively discussions on a varying range of topics. -Perkin
