Write Up:

There were five of us on today's birding event. Three people were new. Welcome to the TOC.

This time of the year only the Ward Island ferry is operating. The weather was mixed today, rain, sun, hail & strong winds. The strong winds caused the ferry to go to Hanlan's Point instead. For times like this they have a TTC bus (that they store on the island in the maintenance garage) that transports people to Wards Island from Hanlan's Point. We elected to walk and look for birds.

On the north side of the island we saw:

  1. Bufflehead - male & female
  2. Hooded Merganser - male & femail
  3. Common Merganser - male & female
  4. Mute Swan
  5. Mallard - male & female
  6. Canada Goose
  7. Ring Bill Gulls
  8. Ivory Gull ? - A small, pure white gull

We were a bit short of time because we had to get back to the ferry at Hanlan's Point, so we caught the bus, at the Centre Island south wharf, to the Ward Island Rectory Cafe.

After lunch we went out the back door of the Cafe to the boardwalk on the south side. In really rough waters we saw:

Oldsquaw - numerous 30 - 50 - male & female

We decided to take the 2:45 PM ferry so we could walk most of the way back to Hanlan's Point.

$8.00 was collected in voluntary donations.
