June 30, 2007: Shakespeare’s Othello at the Stratford Festival
We had a splendid outing to Stratford on Saturday, June 30, 2007. Upon our arrival in Stratford, we parked in front of the main festival theatre and found some picnic benches where we could enjoy our lunch, while enjoying the rippling water, the ducks, and the swans. The baby swans were particularly enchanting. They floated in formation next to their attentive, meticulous mother and their rather fierce, protective-looking father.
While “Othello” has never been my favorite Shakespearean tragedy, the play was definitely worth seeing, and our post-theatre discussion of the production was lively. There was a general consensus, I think, that the actors playing Iago and Desdemona had both performed admirably.
While in Stratford, we also had the pleasure of strolling through an art sale on the lawn next to the theatre. Some of the original oil paintings and water-colors were spectacular, and not a few of us wished that we had brought along some extra spending money.
After the show, we went for supper at one of the local restaurants—a pub with a decent menu--before returning home.
