Write Up:
The seven of us met at about 1PM for the second sitting/show of the brunch/cabaret which consisted of 2 women, one singing and the other playing a piano. The vocalist sang songs mostly in Yiddish, which is similar to German. For those that do not already know, Yiddish is a language that Eastern-European Jews, (including my maternal grandparents who were born in Poland) used to speak before World War II. Some of the songs were familiar to me due to my Jewish upbringing, even though I didn’t understand any of the words (the only Yiddish I understand would get my face slapped, but I digress). I think Julian was able to understand (some of) the words because he is fluent in German. Even though this is not the type of music I listed to, I must admit that I was impressed by the fact that the singer was interacting and encouraging participation with the audience. Teresa and Julian were called up to the stage; I was glad that I was not up there as I probably would have died of stage fright. Everyone in our group was impressed by food, it was an all you can eat (or stuff yourself) buffet. By the time it was over, I solicited interest in a 5 to 10km hike to work off the excessive quantity of food that we consumed, or at least I consumed. This was in addition to the 4 – 5km of walking that I had done before the event started; I started my pre-brunch walk from Yonge and Queen, worked my way up to Wellesley, turned around and walked to College at met up with the group on College, 2 blocks west of Spadina Ave. Emma and Marianna took up my offer, so we walked/hiked to Yonge and Bloor. Unfortunately Marianna was wearing high heeled boots and she could walk no further, so Emma and I walked down to Yonge and Dundas and Marianna took the subway and met us at the Eatons Centre about 20 minutes later. By then we were quite tired, I had walked/hiked about 8km on the hard pavement, and from there we said our goodbyes and parted company. The next day, my feet were hurting considerably, from walking /pounding the pavement. I was wearing sneakers that cost me about $80.00. I am more used to hiking /walking these types of distances on softer ground, with my hiking boot in less urbanized settings, such as the Bruce Trail. Next time I attempt an urban hike, I think I will wear my hiking boots that I recently purchased from Mountain Equipment Co-op.
