Sat, Nov 25 2006 - Pow Wow Event (View Original Event Details)
|
On the day of the Pow Wow, November 25th, Melanie, Sara, Teresa and myself met at Union Station. From the moment we entered the Roger’s Centre we were greeted by many indigenous people dressed in traditional regalia. All the different groups of dancers came together to form a unified image. The image represented the sacred circle, which is at the centre of native life. The circle represents the cycle of life and unity with nature. The dance movements took place at a fast pace and always in tune with the beating of the drums. The dancers ages ranged from the very young to the old. We were mesmerized by the persistent beat of the drums and by the surreal image created by the dancers. It almost induced us into a state of meditation. It was amazing how so many dancers (700-800) could be choreographed to form a perfect circle.
We eventually got hungry and to keep in the spirit of things, we decided to try indigenous food. I lined up to purchase “Indian Tacos”. It turned out to be fried bread with a combination of chilli and vegetables on the side. I washed down the Tacos with a strawberry drink. Don’t know if this is indigenous? Sara’s noises “ ooh, aah, ooh” indicated without a doubt that she loved the fresh fried bread she was eating which was slightly different than mine. I asked for a piece but she gobbled it down so fast it was all gone (Thanks for being so mean). The next time I will know what to do. My hand will move faster than your mouth. Melanie had a buffalo burger. She said it tasted somewhat “wild”. Teresa enjoyed the fried bread too.
After lunch we attended the different venues, particularly of interest was the “performance tent”. I found out that Sara has a hidden talent. She is good at making jewellery especially when using beads. She made a ring and we spent a lot of time admiring it. The performance tent was in competition with the different stalls particularly the ones with jewellery and beads. Because the hoop dance show in the performance tent was late, we moved back and forth from the tent to the stalls.
The guys might not have been interested but for us women the shopping was amazing. Imagine, with all the shopping available (though not planned) we talked to each other into buying a dorky hat. If that’s not funny I don’t know what is? It’s all about having fun and enjoying ourselves and we did. One day when we get together again, I am expecting that all of us will keep to our promise and look positively dorky. Melanie, Sarah and Teresa, you guys are great sport. Thank you for the great laughs.
