Fri, Dec 31 2010 - Kid/Dog Friendly Toronto Island Winter Walk (View Original Event Details)
|
It was another great TOC event to end off 2010. 12 eager walkers met at the ferry docks raring to go. We learned that a few had never been to the Islands before (!). Soon enough we were exploring the quirky homes located at Wards. I told the group all about the Rochester ferry boondoggle, the Leslie Street Spit, and more. We even found an old bicycle so encrusted with marine life that it looked like something out of a movie.
From there it was West on the wooden boardwalk to the pier and bike rental place. We then proceeded to Centreville looking so empty this time of year. However, the Far Enough Farm was slammed with ducks, geese, and other animals. The donkeys and goats were especially happy to see us.
Then began a frustrating washroom search the eventually saw folks using ‘outdoor’ facilities instead. After a quick break for lunch we did actually find an open, working washroom. It appears to be the only one on the Island. Hint, walk North West from the bike rental place.
We passed the Island School, and more. At the Haunted Lighthouse a few folks decided to head back and grab an earlier ferry. The rest of us continued West to Hanlan’s Point past the baseball diamond, trout pound, and clothing optional beach.
On the walk back we learned more about Island life from a resident. She described a pretty idyllic place with TPL book delivery and a cool sense of community. A few of us played on the giant climbing apparatus then it was time to come back to the mainland.
