Skiing on the first weekend in November- it doesn’t get any better than this!

When we left Toronto on Friday night, the skies were quite clear. By Barrie it was snowing a bit. In Duntroon we drove into a blizzard! Once we all found the Farmhouse (if you get to the golf course, you’ve gone too far) and settled in for the evening Milan broke out his Czech High Voltage game. Some of us thought it all too complicated for 10 pm, while Tom, Klara, Pauline, and Sheleena decided to give it a try.

Saturday morning we woke up to a foot of snow. The Highlands Nordic pro shop was open for business, ready to rent us ski packages and sell us passes for the 5 km of open trails. Thus several of us went skiing, others went for a hike, while the rest relaxed in the Farmhouse. After breaking for lunch, some of us returned to skiing, while others hiked the Bruce Trail.

The evening was spent in quiet contemplation, reading books, taking naps and in the company of the friends, eating dinner and playing games. Tom, for example, suggested we play a game involving writing a sentence and then drawing a picture. “How do you win?”, “What is the purpose of the game?”, “Is money involved?”, we all asked. Apparently, the point of the game was simply to have fun and laugh. Although this seemed a bit odd, we gave it a try. That’s when “Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away… Yoda kicked some Jedi butt” turned into “The Ingpo warrior Zelop lies down for a rest after decapitating his enemies Orgov and Monupi” (by way of “Baby in the microwave- very sad”) –or—“Torontonians are joining a marathon on the islands” becomes “The pirate was very afraid of the apple tree and another person was quite amused.”

On Sunday morning, after a leisurely breakfast, the group went for a southwardly hike along the Bruce Trail. Afterwards we returned to the Highlands Nordic pro shop cafeteria for lunch. We then all went home.
