Write Up:

It was a bright, crisp and windy evening. The humber river was alive with a good flow and volume of water. We were serenaded by the songs of many birds. A most enjoyable evening with absoloutely perfect weather and temperature for our discovery walk. A walk that would highlight the history of the Humber River, the Old Mill, the city of Toronto, Lake Ontario shoreline, Grenadir Pond and High Park.

After meeting and greeting at Old Mill Subway, we headed down to Etienne Brule Park and had a group introduction and photo opt. We welcomed Amy and Natalie to Toronto and the TOC.

We walked north to the commemorative plaques of Etienne Brule Park and chatted about the history of the area and the legacy of the Native, French and British traders and in the area.

Returning south, we headed through King’s Mill Park, passing the Humber Yatch Club and eventually finding Discovery Point - a hill top spot marked by a granite boulders and a commerative plaque. We then continued on down passing the Humber Marshes and on to the Humber Bay Bridge for some light dinner and scenic rest stop.

A brief discussion about the history of Humber and Waterfront trail was explained. Highlighting this this multi-use trail - we encounterd numerous walkers, cyclist and even some canoeist going up the Humber.

After a relaxing rest, we header across the Humber Bay bridge following Lakeshoe Bvld and up north to Grenadir Pond. We were treated to the sight of a swan’s nest and a beautiful sunset across the reeds, willows and pond.

As darkness came, we entered high park and meandered through the paved trails and botinacal gardens. A good long stop near Wendigo Creek provided another opportunity for chit chat and photography of ducks and the illuminating sunset across the tree tops and park skyline. It quickly became very dark and an opportunity to explore walking in the “dark” was siezed and surpringly, everyone insisted we tackle a few hilly climbs up and down before we finished our urban hike with a mad dash for the finish line.

And yes, we all finished at 9:00pm sharp!!!

We all chatted, went to the Subway - except one “hard core” TOC member(Karin) who continued the event by walking on Bloor St all the way back to Old Mill!

Thanks to all you lovely ladies, for all your donations to TOC and my wife Geraldine for the pictures....and Jeanne for some extra GREAT shots!
