The day started of at the Pickering GO station at 8am. Blue sky and about 0C. A short drive up to the trail head where we meet up with Jason and Scott. Jason is the president of the Durham Mountain Bike Association(http://durhammountainbiking.ca/) and a member of the Friends of Seaton Trail and keeper of the tool trailer. The tool trailer contains all the hand tools we need to make a new trail. We learnt what a Polaski and McCloud was and how to use them properly. We learnt about the KILL ZONE. I think were ready. Off we go to the re-route section. But first the stream crossing. We set up a chain gang to pass the tools across. The sun was out and the temperature was perfect for working, at about 10C. The re-route was flagged by Jason, Scott and me the week before. The re-route involved clearing a thread about 2 feet wide and about 120 meters or so long. We also had a drainage issue in 3 locations. The solution was a French Drain. Basically it is a channel cut in the trail filled with rocks , pebbles and sand. It acts like a natural pipe, leading the water away from the trail thread. We carried the rocks and sand up from the creek using a few buckets and a wheel barrel. The work was completed with tearing up the old trail thread and planting some vertical sticks to hide the old trail corridor. WELL DONE TEAM! We capped the event off with a short hike south to the next erosion site on the plan. GREAT LOOKOUT at the West Duffins Creek and the fall colours. Thanks to all the members who made it out. It was a great fall day. I think everyone learnt something NEW and we had a real upper body workout at the same time. See you all soon. Gary
