Write Up:
Seven of us had a very enjoyable ride up to North York this afternoon, and five of us made the return trip to Bloor and St. George. The route to North York was far from linear, as we followed one of the recommended routes from the Toronto Cycling Map. There were a few hills to climb, especially early on, but somehow we all managed, with a bit of huffing and puffing. The route makes use of bike lanes and suggested low-traffic residential streets. When we got to North York, we headed south on Yonge Street, where we stopped at the Tim Hortons for a quick lunch and pit stop. On the way back to downtown Toronto, we decided to be adventurous and to find a different route. We headed east and found our way on to the North end of the Don Valley Trail via an access point near Bayview Avenue. As one goes south, one does have to leave the trail for a short while, and to ride through some residential areas near Leslie St. (north of Lawrence Avenue), and to re-connect to the trail on the south-west corner of Lawrence and Leslie. While using the trail did require paying attention to unpredictable pedestrians, the trail was still quite empty the farther south we rode. Eventually, we left the trail at Pottery Road, near the Brickworks, and found our way up the Rosedale Valley Road to the Bloor and St. George area again. The total length of our ride was about 51 km--a bit longer than expected.
