Perfect walking weather awaited an eager group of TOCers for this event

Perfect walking weather awaited an eager group of TOCers for this event. Darrel graciously volunteered to be the official ‘sign holder guy’ and his height coupled with crazy arm flailing ensured that people arriving knew just where to meet us. Introductions were made, paperwork done, and soon we were ready to leave. I also made sure to let the group know that Newsletter submissions are being actively encouraged.

The group made its way south to a beautiful ravine. There I told people about how important preservation efforts by groups like LEAF are helping to maintain a healthy, vibrant tree canopy in our city. BTW, since Frank asked, LEAF stands for Local Appreciation and Enhancement of Forests ;)

We continued South to Queen where we then hung a sharp left and headed Eastward. Another brief stop by the iconic Good Food restaurant and a shout out to the Fox Theatre ‘cause they graciously organized the free outdoor film screening later that same night.

The beautiful architecture of the R.C. Harris filtration plant meant we had to go there. Its unique appearance means that the plant is often selected as a backdrop for film and TV productions. Here it was where we got a lesson in having fun as the youngest walker demonstrated the proper technique for rolling down a hill.

From there it was West along the beach towards Kew Gardens. Strangely the off-leash dog area was relatively dog-free. At Kew Gardens the group learned about efforts by the city to help renaturalize sections of the park that have suffered from severe soil compaction.

Finally we checked out the lovely exterior of the Beach library branch. From there some folks opted to head home while others sought out food before the movie started. At 8PM, after some introductions, we settled on the grass and watched ‘The Goonies’. Like any good story, it still manages to thrill and entertain after all these years.

Once the movie was done a few of us walked back up to Main Subway Station. All in all, it was a lovely night for a walk and an outdoor screening.
