Fri, Apr 14 2006 - Easter Hike - Rouge River valley (View Original Event Details)
|
The day didn't start out too promising. It was raining when I left home. It was still raining when we met at the carpool. Lourita called and said she was going to meet us at the event but PLEASE don't be too early! This gave the rest of us who met at the carpool the opportunity to stop at Starbucks and grab 'yet another' coffee...and an excuse to wait out the rain for a little longer. But the time we made our way to the trailhead (and I demonstrated yet again why you should NEVER take instructions from me unless it is accompanied by an actual map!) the rain had completely stopped!
It turned out to be a great day for a hike. The rain kept away most people so it was as if we had the entire valley to ourselves in the beginning. The hike itself was not challenging, but interesting. Rocky jumped into the river at every opportunity and managed to be a never ending source of worry as the water was deep, the banks were high and the current strong. We had to help him find his way back to us on several occasions. But as usual, he managed to be focus of everyone's attention. especially at lunch!
Speaking of Lunch, where else would we be able to stop at the halfway point at the local McDonalds? Much more comfortable washroom break and real seats then sitting in the wet grass! If we ever go camping at the Glen Rouge campground it will be nice to know that we can all get hotcakes and coffee in the morning!
We saw more people on the way back as the sun came out. The route back led us by some of the higher escarpment with beautiful views. It is an excellent place to hike and accessible by TTC! Our pace was slow and chatty, but no one complained. Tracey and Alice decided that one person had to keep their rain pants on to keep the rain away. Marianna took all the pictures - I couldn't post all of them, there were so many. I think each of us got to spend some time talking with everyone else. I hope to see everyone on a hike again soon!
