Sun, Jun 26 2005 - Mount Nemo (View Original Event Details)

I have to start this write up by admitting this wasn't one of my better organized hiking days!
Even with running late and forgetting my lunch and some of my gear aside, I still felt comfortable making the decision to take the longer route that was allegedly 11Km in my book, which started further down the Bruce Trail and gradually climbed to the top of Mt Nemo.
it was certainly more challenging then our previous outing to Mono cliffs, with a lot more fences to climb (I think those are stiles, there is a picture..), rocks to hop and outcroppings to scramble up. We learnt what happens when you hike in quickly developing areas as the book I was using had described a lovely meandering trail through old orchards, with apple, pears and berries, but instead we got a huge gate that said Private, and no trespassing, video monitored Yep, about 4 kms of lovely meadow trail was sold to an 'exclusive rural community -private and gated'. No hikers allowed! The Bruce trail was rerouted to follow the concession roads, where the tar was melting (and Keren left her boot marks behind!) and some friendly cows checked out the crazy hikers melting in the hot sun. Water supplies dropped dangerously low and hallucinations could have set in had we not reached the leafy shade of the real trail! Ok, I exaggerate, but it was nice to get off the road..
This is where the real challenge began and we walked a steep uphill, scrambled some rocks, hopped over some scary crevices (don't look down!), but reached a viewpoint that was absolutely spectacular. The day was clear and you really could see 50 Kms - The CN tower was spotted easily.
For the sake of those without food and water (myself in that group) I made the executive decision to cut off the last 2.6 Km loop and head back to the cars, but we'll definately make this trip again, just better prepared
