BACKGROUND: Oak Ridges Moraine is about a 200 km ridge of land between Niagara Escarpment and Trent River watershed created by retreating glaciers about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. The Moraine is now a mix of natural areas, such wetlands, forests, kettle lakes, as well as, man-made habitats, such as towns, farm lands and roads. The Oak Ridges Moraine Trail (ORMT) is a green corridor across the Moraine but since only about 25% of the Moraine remains forested, a significant length of the trail passes on the country roads.

Those who want to join me on any of the sections as I hike across the Moraine, should be prepared for road hiking. My plan is to explore ORMT, its side trails, nearby conservation/forest areas and visit any local or historical landmarks along the way.

HIKE DETAILS: Our first stop will be Goldie Feldman Nature Reserve within Happy Valley Forest. We will hike the trail system through the old growth forest in this Reserve (not sure of distance may be 3 km?). We then travel to the Oak Ridges Trail to begin our hike at 10th Concession. The hike will include about 6 km of country road walking, thus, enabling us to pick up the pace a bit for greater aerobic workout. We will end, where we started (well..almost) within the Happy Valley Forest and hike the Happy Valley Tract Side Trail through the forest (linear trail, 2.6 km there and back).

Objective is to enjoy the nature, fill our lungs with clean, crisp air, while enjoying the landscapes, etc. Weather at this time of the year is unpredictable. ICERS may be required on this hike.

We will hike as a group, and thus, wait as necessary for everyone. I am a slow hiker, pausing frequently to take photos so If you think you'll have uncontrollable urges to be constantly on the move or to sprint ahead, this is NOT an event for you. Objective is to maintain at least a 4 km/hr pace on roads/flat sections. Speedsters will be put at the back of the line.

Please ensure you can hike the distance over the rocky, hilly and uneven terrain, and if conditions warrant, over the deep snow or on icy trails (icers/crampons are required), and at the specified pace BEFORE you sign up.

This hike involves a car shuttle, hike will be modified or postponed if not enough drivers sign up. Also, additional participants will be added as space permits.

If you're travelling by TTC to the carpool location, you're responsible for taking into consideration the TTC schedule, any service disruptions, etc in order to arrive on time. We will hike snow, rain or shine.
