Itinerary:
March 31. Spring has just barely begun. The days are just starting to get longer than the nights. Barely.

Earth Hour. Once a year, at 8:30 PM on a Saturday night in March, cities all over the world turn the lights out. This is in a bid to bring awareness about climate change and how easy it is for each of us to to a little thing, and collectively make a big difference.

Let's celebrate Earth Hour 2012 by having dinner in the dark… pitch black dark, that is! You can't get any more "lights out" than that!!

O'noir (noir=black in French) is a concept of restaurant that has its Canadian roots in Montreal, but there are a scant few others around the globe, such as the original "Blind Cow" in Zurich. In other words, this is a rare treat indeed!

OK, so by now you might be asking yourself: what on earth is she talking about! Here's the basics of our own rendition of Earth Hour 2012:
You arrive to the restaurant, descend the steps, and meet the rest of us in the lounge (lighted). Now it's time to order a drink, meet your fellow TOC dinner companions, review the menu, and place your order!
Soon, everyone is brought into the dining room, we all sit down, and "poof" it's dark. As in, real, real dark.
As a TOC group, the 8 of us gather around a table and spend the next 2 hours in the dark: eating (savouring that food with a renewed sense of taste), talking and getting to know each other (can you hear the joyful laughter of the person next to you?), and really immersing yourself in the experience with no outside interference (no texting!). We'll be done before Earth Hour officially begins, so you'll have time to get home and light some candles, or perhaps a few of us will take a short hike around the area and watch as the "lights go out" at 8:30!

Please read the FAQ before signing up. I have made a reservation for 8, so please only sign up if you're committed to coming and your calendar is free that night!

Here are a few other things I'd like you to consider:

  • You have to arrive on time, and can't leave early. (Note the pretty early start time… can you make it on time?)
  • Once we're seated, we'll be approx. 2 hours in the dining area.
  • They can accommodate special diets, but will need a couple of days notice, so if you're vegan, or celiac or something, mention that in the Notes Section when you sign up.
  • Dinner is at least $32 + tax + tip per person. They will do separate cheques, so you'll only need to pay for what you order/eat.
  • You must be an existing TOC member with at least two (2) events to attend this event.
When I mentioned this idea to a TOC member that I was hiking with recently, she exclaimed that she went with some friends and they had an amazing and hilarious time! She highly recommended that I make this happen. I've never been yet, but want to share this new and promising adventure with my fellow TOCers!
