Itinerary:
Monday morning you're in the office kitchen making yourself a steaming cup of joe. You're feeling a little unusually giddy, so decide to try a new flavour, stick the packet into the machine, hit the button...
Just then one of your co-workers walks in. Not your favourite. "Hey {insert your name here}!", he exclaims. "I had the greatest weekend, I won 20 bucks at poker! How about you, what did you do this weekend?," he asks.
"Well, Saturday night was Earth Hour, of course. Oh, and I did a half-marathon" you cooly reply while smiling madly on the inside.
"Wow, good for you. That's what? 10 km?"
"Oh no, it's 21... Point 1." You merrily watch his jaw drop to the floor. And then you glance at your watch, and add: "Gotta run, conference call," and, grabbing your coffee, you high-tail it out of there before he can ask what your "time" was.

If this sounds good to you, then join me on a half-marathon WALK in the city. Sure, the world record for a half is less than one hour, but we'll aim for closer to four hours.

Now, in order to, in pretty good conscience, tell people that you "did a half", one golden rule will apply: no breaks! That's right, we'll be walking from start to finish, so if you need to bring along some snacks to keep your energy up (and that's encouraged!) then make it something that is ready to "eat on the go." (Exceptions apply for safety issues or "bio-breaks").

  • Target Pace: 5.5 km/hour
  • Terrain: 16% sidewalk, 84% trails (most of which are paved)
  • Elevation: First half is gradual downhill, followed by fairly flat, and then BAM a big hill but then flat for the last 2 km (but we'll be warmed up by the time we have to deal with the hill!)
  • Start AND End: Victoria Park Subway Station - parking is free on weekends
  • Facilities: the only washrooms we'll be passing will be on the boardwalk closer to the end of the hike.
Oh, and as tempting as it might be to try to see how fast you can do this, we will be WALKING AS A GROUP. (Have you noticed how often us volunteers need to mention this in our posts? Please be respectful and stay with the rest of us. This is as much for safety as it is for keeping with the spirit of joining a TOC hike with other members).

NOTE: This will be cancelled if there is a chance of persistent rain that day.

2nd Note: Aren't you glad you live in CANADA where you can say you did 21KM (as opposed to a measly 13 miles?!)
