Itinerary:

New to the TOC? New to backpacking?

If you're new to the Club, but hoping to get into the backcountry, or if you've been part of the Club for a while but not had a chance to do a backcountry trip, this is the trip for you!

This trip is geared towards those members who do not have previous backcountry experience. Priority will be given to them. More experienced members will be moved to the wait list. Priority will also be given to drivers!

This trip is designed to be a gentle introduction to 3-season backpacking. We’re going out before it really warms up – snow remaining on the ground is always a possibility, as is some ice still on lakes. Participants should have, or should have access to, packs, tents, 3-season sleeping bags and sleeping pads. Remember you can always rent equipment! Jenn M will provide a more detailed gear list at the mandatory pre-meeting on April 3rd at 7 PM.

Please do not sign up if you cannot make the mandatory pre-meeting. As this is a trip designed for those new to backcountry camping, attendance is a must!

Before we hit the trail, we’ll drive up to Algonquin Friday after work and camp at Mew Lake (car camping). We’ll check in at the park office Saturday morning before heading out on our backpacking adventure!

The route will take us along the Western Uplands backpacking trail in Algonquin Park – some of Ontario’s most accessible wilderness – we’ll have the chance to backpack alongside streams, over creeks, and through the hills. We’ll have a short (1-2 hours) backpack out to Guskewau Lake, where we’ll make our camp. Once we’re set up on Saturday, we’ll head out to explore the surrounding area and the beauty of the backcountry! Possibilities include heading further up the trail, bushwhacking, or a combination loop!

Sunday morning we'll pack up and head back towards the trailhead for the drive back to Toronto.

Participants will be responsible for their breakfasts and lunches, but we will have a group dinner Saturday night at our campsite. Please let Jenn M know if you have any food restrictions.

We will hike at the pace of our slowest group member. This is NOT a race! If you cannot hike in a group under these conditions, please do not sign up.

For those who are dog-phobic! The coordinator may be bringing one or both of her dogs on this trip. If you have a dog and would like to bring it, please speak to Jenn M first.
