The first hike along the Sydenham section was held on a lovely, sunny, late-spring/early-summer day. Nine hikers braved the two-and-a-half hour drive from Toronto to explore this relatively untravelled part of the Bruce Trail. The first hundred yards or so were a bit daunting - the trail entry point, a stile behind a farmhouse, was severly overgrown, to the point where we wondered if the twenty-two kilometres were going to be passable! After we climbed over the stile and fought through the line of defensive trees, things opened up and improved dramatically. The trail wandered alongside fields, through mature woods, around Walters Falls at the village of the same name, and along country roads. A final short, sharp climb up the escarpment edge, followed by a couple of kilometres through cedar bush and alongside fields led us back to the end point, where the main group were able to rest their weary feet while the drivers scooted back to the hike start to fetch the other vehicle. Everyone enjoyed a well-deserved stop for burgers, fries and shakes at Champ Burgers, and we still arrived back in Toronto in daylight, thanks to the long twilight at this time of year.
